The Thing on the Roof

The story follows an unnamed scholar in London who is contacted by his academic rival, Tussmann, an obsessive researcher fascinated by ancient occult secrets. Tussmann becomes obsessed with locating a rare copy of Nameless Cults, a forbidden book written by the mysterious occultist Friedrich von Junzt. The book describes a hidden “Temple of the Toad” deep in Honduras and hints at terrible supernatural forces guarding it. Ignoring warnings in the text, Tussmann travels to Central America in search of treasure and forbidden knowledge. Inside the ruined temple, he discovers a strange toad-shaped jewel and uses it to open secret underground passages. Instead of treasure, he encounters disturbing tunnels, ancient crypts, and hints of something monstrous lurking below. Though he escapes and returns to England, he is mentally shaken and haunted by what he experienced. Soon afterward, Tussmann is found dead under horrifying circumstances: his body bears enormous hoof-like marks on his chest, suggesting that some ancient creature or god followed him home from the temple. The narrator realizes too late that Tussmann unleashed something beyond human understanding. The story blends themes of forbidden knowledge, ancient civilizations, and cosmic horror, which are common in both Howard’s and H. P. Lovecraft’s mythos fiction.
